What is Yoga?
Many people today think yoga is the act of standing in a pose (or series of poses), and while some yoga practices include asana (poses), the asana itself is not yoga.
Yoga is a philosphy. Yoga is a way of life. Yoga is the science of experiencing first hand the return to your authentic self (often referred to as Atman, God, Source, The Divine, The Universe, etc). It is a comprehensive system for discovering and experiencing that self that exists beyond the body, beyond time and space, beyond the ego-self that you believe yourself to be. It's going down the rabbit hole, waking up from the matrix, and realizing reality is not at all what you thought or what it seems. In fact, none of this is real, and Yoga awakens you to this.
The idea of standing in a series of poses became popularized in the 19th century. Very often these yoga postures and modern yoga classes are merely reinforcing your belief that you are the body which is exactly the opposite of the intention of authentic yoga. Yoga has been around for over 5,000 years, while the idea of doing a series of poses to get in shape is a very modern (and western) concept.
Standing in poses is a tool to practice yoga, and you do not have to be in a 'pose' at all to practice yoga. Yoga is a state of being, a consciousness, a shift in your very perception of who and what you are. The true core of yoga is meditation. It's something you do every moment of every day, not just on a mat in an hour. If you can make your life a moving meditation, a prayer so to speak, so that you are always connected to that inner divinity, then you are well on your way to acheiving the goal of yoga - union with your authentic self which is none other than God. Also, it is a good time to mention that yoga is not a religion and has no dogma; it merely suggests ways to live your life that help you achieve the ulitmate peaceful state of being. You adopt what works for you, and let go of the rest.
If this intriques you, and you want to know more, I would recommend reading the Yoga Sutras, or the Upanishads (but get a recommended translation as they can be tough to follow).
If you like just standing in poses to get in shape, and want to forget the rest of it - go for it too! There is nothing wrong with it, but just know that if you want to, you can go much deeper than what the 'poses' offer. Exploring authentic yoga will take you on a return to your authentic self, giving you liberation, happiness, health and peace of mind in the process. These side benefits alone are worth the journey, even if it takes you many lifetimes to become 'self realized'.
Namaste.
